Malformations of the reproductive system

reproductive system of the dog

The malformations affect both male and female dogs. To find anomalies and malformations, a veterinary visit is essential.

As for male dogs:

  • Testicular ectopia that is an abnormal positioning of one or two testicles at the abdominal, inguinal or inguinal-abdominal level. At birth the testicles are positioned in the abdominal cavity and descend into the scrotum in the first two weeks of life but it is necessary to wait until puberty to be sure not to be faced with any anomaly. Ectopia can be right, left or bilateral and affects 10% of adult dogs. It is of hereditary origin. Treatment must be medical but often surgery involving the removal of the ectopic testicle is recommended.

  • Monorchidism consisting of a malformation of the testicles that involves the presence of only one testicle. It is preferable not to breed the dog as the tare is transmissible;

  • Genital Hypoplasia which is the lack of certain components of the genital system that can affect both males and females. The affected dog is sterile;

  • Phimosis is an anomaly that involves the reduction of the width of the preputial hole. It can be congenital or acquired: if congenital, surgery can be done, if acquired, the disease that caused the problem must be treated:

  • Hypospadias anomaly that occurs when the urethra is positioned abnormally with respect to the penis

As for females:

  • Genital hypoplasia (of which we have already given some hints)

  • Abnormal morphology of the vulva , which obstructs access to the penis and makes mating so difficult if not impossible. It can be congenital or acquired following trauma.
